Safe and efficient driving tips and tricks

Post by pro_roadtrip » Thu Feb 15, 2018 3:32 pm

Basic everyday visual inspection tips
1. All Oil level check once a week and battery once in 15 days and once a month for maintenance free battery
2. Check Tyres.. Air Pressure, Stone stuck between threads, Bulges on sides of tyre, Dents on Wheel rim
3. Allow 120 seconds after starting the engine to allow oil to circulate. While the engine is warming up check all lights and indicator
4. Clear Wind screen.. a dirty wind screen is blinding
5. Side mirror adjust, use panoramic view adjust technique. ( Sit in the car rest your head to the side of your right window and adjust the right mirror to see the rear end of the car.. similarly get your head to the center of your rear view mirror and adjust the left mirror to see the left end of your car.. and set your cabin rear view in such a way that the entire rear view is in your complete vision)
6. Check indicators for any unusual indications
Points on Defensive and efficient Driving
1. Look up and have a farther view
2. Use both hands to hold the steering the maximum time
3. Get the habit to look though your windows on sharp turns
4. “HIGH SPEED HIGH GEAR-- LOW SPEED LOW GEAR” ensures smoother and fuel efficient drive.
5. Maintain Distance for efficient braking .. Sudden braking burns bit extra fuel and brake pads wears off sooner
6. Lift and roll driving … (Take the foot off the accelerator and drive for free on flat roads and down hills)
7. Turn off the engine for stop more than 60 seconds..( Saves additional 10 to 15% fuel)
8. Avoid engine idle speed .. This consumes more fuel..
9. On an Express way or driving up or down hill .. use apex driving technique and lower one gear on curves and bends for max traction and improved center of gravity to hold the car down…. Only on multi lane roads not on single lane road
10. Drive bit slow and avoid lane cutting on CONCRETE roads..Cause lot of friction and heat is generated (Most Tyres are designed to be drivien on TAR)
11. Avoid negotiating smaller potholes .. the car has shock absorbers to take the hit.. if a bigger pot hole or a slight step on the road( this point is found maximum where the road meets the starting point of the bridge .. I call it the Axel breaker) go relatively slow over it or look for a smooth spot
.
12. Both Hands on steering Maximum time.. (plam the wheel at 0 to 30 km/hr, Shuffle drive at normal driving speed .. best position 9 and 3 use equal amount of pressure by both the hand on the steering when turning at high speed … …. use combination of all steering techniques as per the speed ..
13. Avoid driving at twilight and night driving …ie DAWN and DUSK and if your are on the road, schedule a one hour pit stop during dawn or dusk ….
14. Driving on sunny roads .. Use polarized sun glasses for glare free vision
15. Allow people to over take you .. There are pests out there .. drivers with attitude, ego, racers, Ignorant driver .. Who doesn’t even look or pops out their rear view mirror and GANDHI TYPES who will just stick to their lane no matter what.. the fun is to look out for these kind of drivers and find an escape route ..
16. REST if u feel even bit tired .. a 15 minutes power nap helps you to drive upto 2 hrs.. then take a call again
GUYS please highlight if I missed something important

If possible, please also add information on engine braking, reverse engine braking and pump (cadence)braking.

Engine braking.. works well when u r driving down hill or on the curves If u are getting down a steep ghat ... driving in 2 nd and 3rd gears gives you higher controls on the curves.. The trick is to lower one gear considering that u r driving in 3rd gear and when u r just about to hit the apex of the curve lower the gear just few metres ahead of the curve and u will notice that u r turning the vehicle like a Pro.. but it needs practice...

Stopping the car by engine brake... in case of emergency braking at high speed. Lower the gear as you hit the brakes .. do remember to release the clutch as u brake.. this needs practice.. but it's an sure shot way to stop u r car more efficiently...
A GOOD DRIVER IS ONE WHO STOPS THE CAR ON TIME

Engine Braking and Reverse engine braking are useful when descending steep inclines. The idea is to put your vehicle in the lowest gear possible and don't use accelerator and clutch. Pump the brakes occasionally to lower the descent speed. If the descent is too steep, put your car in reverse gear and just let it go gradually, again pumping the brakes occasionally.

Ok haven't tried putting the gear on reverse when driving slowly front ... Won't it affect the gear box

We should also explain to the Indian Driving Public why not to use blinkers inside the tunnels :)

Not only tunnels, but fog and rains too. I've already written about it here: viewtopic.php?f=9&t=139&p=501&hilit=Hazard#p501

Should only be used in case of steep descent where the car seems to skid when you pump the brakes.
