Ladakh is a destination that’s on everyones wish list, irrespective of age. It is one of the most beautiful destinations that one will ever experience in all of their road trips. However, most people are concerned about what the best time to visit Ladakh is. But, is there really a better time? Come find out.
Learn about Ladakh
First things first, Ladakh is a valley and Leh is a city in Ladakh valley. Ladakh is a vast region with changing terrains on practically every curve. Leh is a city where you can truly explore and experience the food, culture, shopping that is native to this place.
The Leh market is bustling with tourists and yet it isn’t all that crowded. There is a different vibe altogether. Explore the market in the evening and you will see a different version of it with lights and if you’re lucky then snowfall too! It is a winter wonderland during that time and is one of the best times to visit Ladakh.
Best time to visit Ladakh
The best time to visit Ladakh? That’s a tough question to answer – from the perspective of someone who has been there multiple times. Still, I’ll try to answer so that it will be easier for all of you to plan your road trip to Ladakh.
1.If you want to go on a road trip (either Srinagar-Leh-Manali or Manali-Leh-Manali), either of the routes have enough for you to see. But always find out about the condition of roads, access to passes etc. You can get this information from our Scouts too, who will help you plan a well curated road trip.
2.If you want to experience loads of snow – Late May to Late June is the answer. For those of you who haven’t experienced snow or simply love the idea of it, this is the best time to visit Ladakh!
3.If you want clear roads with less challenges – August is when you should plan your road trip. During this time, the weather is pleasant and you will hardly face any hindrances in your trip plan. In case of any accidents or unexpected landslides, is the only time you might face a delay.
4.If you want to see varied colours of Ladakh – Mid to Late September is your slot for a road trip to Ladakh. This is the time the terrain is changing hues and you will see wild flowers aplenty, yaks grazing, mormonts, wild horses and ibex if you’re lucky! The Ladakh festival also happens around this time. It is the best time to visit if you want a little flavour of their culture.
5.If you want to see White Ladakh, you’ll have to fly-in and out. Unless you are well aware of the below zero temperature, one can’t handle that kind of cold.
6.If you want to do a Chadar Trek – Late Jan/Feb is when it is the best time to visit Ladakh. So for trekkers, this is a must do!
Lastly, we leave the choice to you if you’re looking for the best time to visit Ladakh and that is going anywhere between Dec-May. There will be plenty of holidays or long weekends where you can plan your road trip to Ladakh.
While some people prefer July as an option, I’d advise you to avoid July and early August in the rainy season and while Ladakh generally is in the rain shadow region, there’s a possibility of it raining. It creates havoc with landslides and flash floods.
Similarly, I’d advise you to avoid October for a road trip as it may snow any time and the passes may get closed.
Hope I’ve answered your query in detail. However, if there’s any confusion regarding the same, feel free to hit us up. You can find us here.
