Movies are a true example of art imitates life imitates art. It may sound convoluted but it’s true. There is no better way to make a holiday destination popular in India than feature in Bollywood travel movies. This holds true for foreign vacations as much as Indian road trip destinations. If you are planning a trip within India, let these 5 road trip movies be your guiding light.
5 Bollywood Road Trip Movies
Dil Chahta Hai (2001)
No Bollywood travel movie list can be complete without this movie. Even though the Mumbai to Goa road trip was just a small part of the movie plot, it put it right on the map. Everyone wanted to go on a road trip to Goa, in a convertible, with the DCH soundtrack playing in the background. You should try it too! Gather your friends, hit the roads and check out these beaches in Goa.
Bombay to Goa (1972)
While we are talking about Bombay-Goa trip, one cannot miss one of the original travel movies with Aruna Irani and not-yet-angry-man Amitabh Bachchan. The movie showcased a brilliant star cast channeling different cultures, on a bus trip to Goa along the Konkan coast route. It is as exciting as travel movies can be and would make you nostalgic of the simpler days of travel. Go on a road trip with your friends and family and check out a different side of the popular destination.
Piku (2015)
It isn’t every day that you watch a father-daughter duo in road trip movies. Piku gives you the perfect road trip experience. You are on the highway connecting Delhi and Kolkata with a night stop at Varanasi. Dhaba stops, trouble finding toilets on the way, stopping on the highway side to stretch out and argue – isn’t that what family road trips are like. Thank God, we can now map out toilets and dhabas before we hit the road on ScoutMyTrip
Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani (2013)
This premise of this entire movie is all about wanderlust, both in India and abroad. Travel movies like these make you nostalgic about every trip you have taken with your friends and plan a reunion immediately. It will inspire you to trek up the snow-clad mountains of Gulmarg or take a slow-paced vacation in the beautiful palaces of Rajasthan.
Jab We Met (2007)
This is one of those travel movies that seem to flit in and out of multiple cities. What starts with a DDLJ like entry into a train compartment, quickly makes some interesting stops and turns into a road trip passing through Ratlam, Kota, and Bathinda. Thereafter, it takes you to the mountains of Manali and Simla and features the Rohtang Pass on the Manali-Leh Highway. There is something totally charming about the path its characters take both literally and figuratively.
