#TravelTalkWithNeha: In Conversation with The Tiny Taster

Hello travelers! This is your always-online friend Neha aka @pwneha, with a new series #TravelTalkWithNeha, where I bring you interesting, fascinating people who inspire me. Today we are in conversation with The Tiny Taster aka Roxanne Bamboat, one of my favorite people online.

1) From food to travel blogging. How did that happen and what has the journey been like?

The truth is I started out with both food and travel blogging. It’s just that the accessibility to food was much higher than travelling so it took a while to kick off the travel part. I started my blog in 2012 and the first posts that were travel related ended up happening in 2013 and from there, no looking back. It’s been exhausting, exciting, nervous but just so much fun. I’m doing exactly what I’ve always wanted to do, I’ve found my calling and I’m happy.

2) Tell us about your work life. Were you always freelancing or was it a natural progression while blogging?

Always been a freelancer. The idea of a full-time job has never appealed to me. I’ve found it restrictive and I feel trapped. I was working in ad film production before I started blogging but even then was a freelancer with no fixed allegiance to any agency or production house. I started blogging as a hobby and was overwhelmed by the response. It’s only after a year or so that I decide to quit my job and focus on writing entirely. I suppose you could say it felt natural enough and more than anything I just really enjoyed it and I’m a big believer in doing what makes you happy regardless of anything else.

3) Which destination stands high on your bucket list and why?

Oh god, everything I’m hungry for it all. The absolute big dream is to travel through South and Central America and eventually Antarctica. I’ve been fascinated with South America since I was a teenager. I can’t explain it. I even worked with a South American travel specialist to help people plan trips to the continent and could easily plan a trip through Peru Brazil Venezuela Argentina and Colombia but alas I need to really have enough time to do justice to it all, not to mention a hefty travel fund.

I’m always more attracted to destinations that have a more cultural aspect so currently I’m obsessing about Russia, Turkey ( which I should hopefully visit this year ) China ( I’ve been but I’d like to do a more detailed trip ) Japan, Tanzania and Botswana ( I want to do safaris there ).

4) What would be your ideal road trip?

I love road trips, honestly, I haven’t done as many as I’d like to but I really do believe you see a place best while driving through or walking through a city. I had done a fabulous 2-week road trip through Portugal and it’s been one of my best experiences. I’d do it again in a heartbeat.

My ideal road trip as clichéd as it might sound would be to travel through Europe by road. Ideally Spain France or Italy (all would be amazing) and just visit little towns and villages and eat my way through them picking up recipes and ingredients as I drive through.

5) What are your tips for other travel bloggers who want to travel and work around the world?

Honestly, I would say please understand that it is not as romanticized as people make it seem. It is HARD WORK. It’s very gratifying if this is what you really want to do but it can get hectic and frustrating fast. Ideally, my best advice is to not quit your job and ease into this. Not having a regular paycheque is not easy for everything to adjust to so a saving fund might help. Be patient, learn to appreciate all travel. It doesn’t always have to be luxury or adventure, find your niche, what you relate to and the stories you want to tell. I would say try and collect a bank of stories or posts before you kick off your blog so you have material even when you’re not travelling. Don’t get caught up with what other blogs do or where they travel to. Each one’s journey is different so try and find your own, your own voice and then just enjoy the trip 🙂
