1. Shaniwar Wada Fort in Pune
A simple change in a letter from ‘Dha’ to ‘Ma’ by his aunt led to the murder of Narayanrao, the young Peshwa prince in the fort. Even today legend has it that on full moon nights, cries of ‘Kaka!
Mala Vachva’ can be heard in the fort. Situated in the heart of the city, the fort is a reminder of a glorious time in history.
2. Bhangarh Fort in Rajasthan
The legend of the haunted town of Bhangarh has been widely featured on many travel and paranormal shows and articles. The fort is considered to be the most haunted place in India and the ASI has placed a sign at the entrance, prohibiting entry between sunset and sunrise. There are many stories to explain the paranormal activity and these stories attract tourists from all around the world. Well, if you’re a brave heart, this could be your next stop.
3. Magnetic Hill in Ladakh
On the Leh-Kargil-Batalik highway, you can experience the gravity-defying forces of the Magnetic Hill. Park your car in the designated spot, put it in neutral gear and be amazed as you watch it go uphill on its own. This is definitely a must-visit attraction on a trip to the mountains.
4. Karni Mata Temple in Bikaner
Thousands of rats welcome you into the Karni Mata temple where they are revered and worshipped. There are many stories explaining the significance of the rats and spotting a white rat amongst the black ones, is believed to be especially fortunate. So, are you ready to find the odd one out?
5. Bullet Baba Shrine near Jodhpur
Legend has it that when Om Singh Rathore or Om Banna met with an accident on his way to Chotila from Pali. His bike was confiscated by the police but kept miraculously reappearing at the accident site. The locals took this as a sign and enshrined the bike. Hundreds of motorists now stop by the shrine to pay their respects to the spirit of Om Banna with flowers and liquor bottles.
6. Kongka La in Ladakh
The pass is in the disputed area near the Indo-China Line of Control in Ladakh and just a dot on the map. Locals believe that the pass is a UFO Base and people on both sides of the pass claim to have had UFO sightings. One must definitely go and find out if there is truth behind the rumor.
7. Mysterious Bird Deaths in Jatinga, Assam
Every year in Sept-Oct, hundreds of birds plunge to their death in a small town in Assam. There are many theories related to fog, altitude, high winds and village lights that try to explain the phenomena. Yet, the mystery of this strange annual occurrence isn’t completely resolved.
8. Root bridges of Khasi & Jaintia hills, Meghalaya
Can you imagine the ingenuity of the tribes living in the hills, where they have shaped the aerial roots of the rubber trees to form bridges? These root bridges criss-crossing through the jungles over the many streams present a beautiful landscape and convenient routes for the locals. One must walk across one of these bridges when visiting Meghalaya
